SAPS Workshop Rules

SARASOTA AREA PLAYWRIGHTS SOCIETY “RULES OF THE ROAD”

General Rules:

  • Only SAPS members can read at workshops. Exceptions may include roles for Children and Young Adults. We define young adults as those under 30-both character and actors you may be asking outside the group. Other exceptions such as BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and people of color) can also be made by Ron or Connie. If approval is given, and it will be a Zoom reading, those names and emails must be given to Joanie Anton.

  • Only SAPS members can have plays read at workshops (includes co-authors).

  • While on  zoom SAPS welcomes visitors who are invited by members. All visitors must provide Joan their email address. Note: Visitors may not partake in the feedback session.

  • New members must attend two workshops before having their own plays read.

  • Playwrights may not read their own plays. Any exceptions must be approved by Ron or Connie.

  • ONLY COMPLETED PLAYS CAN BE SCHEDULED FOR A WORKSHOP.

  • Playwrights are responsible for printing the scripts for the actors. When there is a zoom reading the playwright must provide a copy of the script by email to each of the actors.  The playwright must also cast his or her play.

  • Musicals qualify but no choreography.

  • No play can take more than one workshop (Full plays must read in our two-hour block.).  Any exceptions must be approved by Ron or Connie.

Procedures for having a play workshopped:

  • Contact Ron or Connie to schedule a reading. They require the title of your play, character names and play length. After you have scheduled a date, cast your play or reach out to Steve Black who will help cast and arrange for a director. Once the actors are confirmed send that information to Joan. If you are using a child or young adult (not SAPS members) please inform Joan. Note: Joan will require email address for non-member actors.

  • If one of your actors drops out, do not cancel, find another actor. Again, only completed plays can be scheduled. Once scheduled it’s final!

  • Again, only completed plays can be scheduled. Once scheduled it's final! Special consideration will be given to members who have not had a play workshopped during our annual season.

  • Recording of readings. SAPS does not provide this service. You may record your event with the permission of your actors.

  • Plays will be reread only if: Change in story or plot. Length of play has substantially changed. Character changes.

  • NO SUBMITTED PLAY WILL BE REVIEWED PRIOR TO A SCHEDULED READING.
